Girton

Ah, Girton. Where to start. Girton College is, funnily enough, situated in the village of Girton, about 2.5 miles out from the centre of Cambridge. As such, it's pretty isolated from the rest of the university, and earns much ridicule amongst other students for being so. It's also traditionally known as the college that takes people from the pool, since it tends to not get enough applicants of its own accord. The reject college, you might say.

Girton isn't too bad though, really. The reason it's so far out is because it was formerly an all female college, and heaven forbid the male and female students should mix. Its isolation means that there's a strong sense of closeness within the college, and Girton village has enough shops and pubs for you to survive. You will of course need a bike though, unless you plan on making lonely 45 minute walks along A-roads to lectures every day.

First years live on the main college site, all paying the same rent. In the second year you can live in Wolfson Court, Girton's outpost half way to Cambridge, which has its own cafeteria and is reasonably modern, in a house on Girton Road, marginally closer to Cambridge, or within college again. Third years normally live within college.

Being rather far out (I'm beginning to feel I've stressed that point enough) Girton has a lot of open space, allowing for luxuries as a heated indoor pool! It also means that when Girton students decide to descend upon Cambridge at night, they do so in big groups, and in a big way!
