Selwyn

Selwyn, if nothing else, is a pretty college. Founded in the late 19th Century, it's just old enough to look old and grand, with lots of red-brick. The only other college I can think of that's made of red brick is Robinson, and only a mad man would claim that Robinson is anywhere near as pretty as Selwyn. Indeed, only a mad man would claim that Robinson is Pretty. Anyway... Situated on Grange Road, Selwyn's just across the river from the main part of town, and right next to the Sidgwick site and Newnham College (which is great for arts students and for men, respectively).
First years live in Cripps Court, directly across the road from the Old Court (living in Cambridge, you'll soon find lots of buildings are named after Mr. Cripps, who was a student at John's in the 40s before going on to become rich, and donating lots of money to various parts of the university). It's not the most modern building in the world, but having all the first years around you more than makes up for it, plus the rent at about £90/week isn't that bad. In later years you'll have the choice to be able to live in Old Court, Ann's court, or one of the several Hostels the college owns nearby, all of which have their own positives and negatives.
The hall offers three meals a day (except on Sundays when breakfast and lunch are rolled into one), which are reasonably priced and good quality. Cooking facilities in college are limited. There are two formal halls a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, to which gowns and suits must be worn. Tickets costs £6 (£6.50 for guests), and must be purchased well in advance, and there's normally a long queue for them!
The atmosphere at Selwyn is really friendly - with only 350 undergraduates we're not at all a big college, so that combined with the communal living at Cripps Court means that everyone knows and gets on with one another.
